As an Engineer, do you spend enough time in the machine shop?
This question was posed on Brian Jones' Industrial Interface Blog. Read Chuck's summerized comment that was posted in Linkedin:
"I am a machinist with 37 years machining experience and have been a machine shop owner for almost 10 years. I frequently invite engineers over to sit down and collaborate with me to make their design more 'machinable'. This optimizes efficiency and saves time and money for them and their companies. I strongly believe that CrossWind Machining's success depends on our customers' success so, I do this as an added service at no extra cost to clients/engineers. I have found that most shops don't offer this approach and may not be so accommodating to the idea.
I further believe it would be advantageous for design engineers to know more of the manufacturing end of the process. It allows cross collaboration in the manufacturing develpment life cycle. After all, that's what they do best and I stick to what I do best."
